"Impulse Freak" is an ongoing cartoonist "jam" mini-comic, starring that loveable alcoholic monkey, STIP ("Simple To Illustrate Protagonist.") Each issue of the comic features the work of dozens of different artists -- each of whom contribute three panels to STIP's story. The tricky part is, the cartoonists only get to see the three panels that immediately precede or follow their contribution. I volunteered to take part in the "backwards" thread, meaning I had to create something to precede the three panels I was shown. I received a copy of a three-panel sequence of STIP scaling a lighthouse, starting with the caption "And climb he did, striving ever so diligently to overcome this manmade beacon of light." So I had to think of a reason for a monkey to climb a lighthouse. I also had to end my sequence with a caption or bit of dialogue that could reasonably precede the phrase, "And climb he did..." Finally, I wanted my first panel to act as a possible punchline for its preceding sequence's set-up. Which hadn't been created yet. (For the record, the preceding sequence's cartoonist decided to show STIP playing with a ViewMaster.)
